A Bit About Me
My name is Cynthia Cherise Gowin, I am an Artisan, born in California December 25, 1957, and living in NE Oklahoma since June, 1996. I’m a retired Professional Photographer, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and widow. I found my love of working with gourds in 1996. I was carving eggs and breaking too many. My husband bought me a few gourds to practice my carving skills, his thinking was I wouldn’t break them. Once I started working with the gourds I was addicted to them. I am continually trying new techniques. I am self taught, with the exception I took a carving class with my favorite gourd artist Bonnie Gibson in 2019. I love her work she inspires me to include as much detail as is possible. I found my love of glass in 2020 at a craft fair where I saw the most beautiful flowers created by Annette Gordon. I met Annette’s mother Hazel there and became instant friends. The next day Hazel and I went shopping for glass for her daughter. I came home with a box load for myself. Now anytime I see a piece of glass I look for the flower it will make. I have had many people scold me for drilling holes in vintage glass. I tell them I just made theirs more valuable. My thought is to show the newer generation of people the beauty of glass in the outside sunshine not stuck in a Cupboard collecting dust. I strive to make my artwork last a lifetime, to be passed on to the next generation.
